In 1899 when U.S. Patent Office Commissioner Charles H. Duell uttered “everything that can be invented has been invented” he could not have been more wrong. The 20th century ushered in some of humanity’s greatest inventions such as the airplane, radio, computer, mobile phone and hula hoop and we’re still not done. The patent was developed to protect an inventor’s interest in his/her intellectual property. A patent is a property right granted by the government to its owner to exclude others from making, using or selling an invention for a set period of time. It is essential legal protection for intellectual property integral to preserving its value. Once an idea is fully formed inventors become entrepreneurs and they require legal expertise to complete the process from the patent application, through regulatory compliance and tax consequences, all the way to market. Lesley Wallerstein has the knowledge and experience, both technical and legal, to shepherd you through this process.

A trademark is a symbol, word or words that are legally registered or established by use as representing a company or product. Trademarks give a company and its products a unique identity and, in their purest form, evoke good will and brand loyalty. Trademarks require protection so that they are not used or misused by others causing confusion or, even worse, a reduction in the value of the company brand or its products. Trademark protection is a constant concern and the security of the company brand or product requires careful legal attention in all business dealings. Lesley will take you from trademark search through registration and guide you in forging business partnerships that keep these valuable company assets safe.

A copyright is the exclusive legal right given by the government to the originator (or an assignee) of a film, literary record, artistic or musical material. Like patents and trademarks, copyrights are valuable business assets that need protection. Lesley can insure the proper registration of your copyright and the continued protection of your interests for the life of the copyright.
